The Collected Works of Stalin Volume 8 covers the period of January–November 1926, the majority of a year in which Stalin further consolidated Leninism with a strong theoretical defense, against the “United Opposition" bloc, led by Leon Trotsky, Grigory Zinoviev, and Lev Kamenev, through texts such as ‘Concerning Questions of Leninism’, ‘The Opposition Bloc in the C.P.S.U.(B.)’. Stalin’s interventions argued for the necessity of ideological and organizational unity of the party, under conditions of capitalist encirclement, against the “capitulationist” line of the Opposition.
This volume also further covers the ongoing and expanding process of socialist industrialization, including the importance of a strong worker-peasant alliance, and the necessity of “socialist accumulation”, covered in the report “The Economic Situation of the Soviet Union and the Policy of the Party.”
International questions are also considered, with contemporaneous analysis on the 1926 General Strike in Britain, the coup d’etat in Poland of the same year, and the burgeoning revolutionary situation in China.

The Collected Works of Stalin Volume 7 covers the year 1925, a pivotal year in which important decisions and progress were made towards the development of socialist industrialization, in the face of capitalist encirclement. This year was also important in establishing Stalin's vision for the country, in the face of various forms of opposition. Arguing against forms of Trotskyism and Zinovievism, which are characterized as "defeatist", the decision to focus on industrial development was ratified at The Fourteenth Congress of the Bolshevik Party, which took place towards the end of the year.
